Based in Ontario, Union Gas is a major Canadian natural gas storage, transmission and distribution company with over 100 years of experience. Recognized for the past five years as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, the company has approximately 2,200 employees across the province.
To communicate health and safety messages to employees in an engaging and informative way and increase their understanding of risk tolerance, incident reporting and shared learnings.
Union Gas partnered with Fifth Story to produce an internal communications video series entitled Good Catch, Incidents Without Loss. All videos are 60 to 90 seconds long and have a similar look and feel. Each video communicates health and safety messages through the on-camera interview of a Union Gas employee that has been exposed to a work-related risk factor (e.g. lightning) and shares his or her personal story. Visual storytelling engages viewers, and text graphics reinforce the messaging.
The internal communications video series is promoted via Union Gas’ internal owned media channels, including the company’s intranet.
“Feedback on the video series has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Sue Flaman, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Union Gas. “The employees who have participated in the videos have also been recognized and commended by their peers.”
“Having our employees tell their own stories through the Good Catch video series is what differentiates this program over other safety initiatives,” adds Sue. “Our vision is to create a workplace where employees can openly share their learnings, both on and off the camera, and ultimately prevent others from having the same incident.”
