Winter is tough…

Hello from Toronto, my morning walk up Woodbine Avenue to the subway station was better this morning for the first time in weeks. Sometimes I feel like the east end of this city is the land that time forgot. After what seems like about a dozen large winter storms this season marked by the typical combo of mounds of snow, followed by freezing rain, followed by rain, followed again by a deep freeze…at times this winter I’ve felt like Frederick A. Cook taking the first human steps on the Arctic floor – I wonder how many times he fell walking his dogs…

But as I said, this morning was better – it’s March, the ice was almost gone as I made my way up the hill. It reminded me of a Henry Rollins quote I heard a while back: “In winter, I plot and plan. In spring, I move.”

Well, ain’t that the truth – even though we shot a fair bit of video this winter at Fifth Story, I’m glad the days of gear ploughing through snow banks and hauling multiple pairs of shoes to set are almost behind us.

Natural light is your ally

If you’ve spent your winter plotting and planning, the warm weather will soon be here – and with it, the season where video springs to life. It’s time to shoot, take off the parkas and take advantage of the natural light, the extra hours of light and the light at the end of winter’s long tunnel. Time to make to most of longer days and bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor shooting. Natural light set against the backdrop of nature springing back to life can work for you on both sides of the walls…

Check out this project that we worked on with Velux the last time the weather warmed.

Imagine the difference in these beautiful indoor shots featuring the big New York loft-style windows if this had been shot in winter? The greenery and natural light add so much to each of these scenes, to say nothing of the skylights and the blue sky behind them…

Put spring weather to work

Also, let us help you make the most of a day on set. We certainly wouldn’t be sending a crew out on the roof of a four-storey house in the dead of winter, but in the spring the time is right to break out a whole menu of social assets in support of your upcoming marketing efforts.

So, spring is almost here but get in touch with us now so we can start to plan your campaign. Let’s get moving, the last season of Game of Thrones may be coming, but thankfully, winter isn’t…
